It was second straight series of consolidation for the Indian equity market. For the entire series, the benchmark index
kept hovering in the range of merely 500 points but due sharp sell-off witnessed in the last two trading sessions of the
series, the Nifty concluded the January series tad below 18000 mark.
During the series, we could hardly trace any meaningful open interest activity in both the key indices. Rollover in Nifty
and BankNifty stood at 79% and 84% respectively, which is lower especially considering reduction of open interest in
both Nifty as well as BankNifty. Stronger hands curbed liquidity from the Indian equity market, as they sold to the tune
of Rs. 23,254 in the month of January. Meanwhile, they also lightened up decent shorts and rolled over few bearish bets
in index futures segment. The Long Short Ratio’ has plunged to 38% from 57% MoM, suggesting they still hold majority
of shorts in system. On options front, 17500 put and 18000 call strikes are attracting traders’ attention. Considering the
open interest reduction series on series for second consecutive month and the upcoming event of Union Budget 2023,
we believe traders are light on positions now and build-up in the coming week shall be important to watch out for.
However, FIIs positioning in the F&O segment specifically and Nifty PCR-OI which is below 1, it seems market is a bit
oversold now and any positive trigger during the budget can boost the overall sentiments which can lead to smart
short covering rally,
